Tat Tvam Asi

That thou art

A short retreat in the Vedantic tradition, held on a hillside inside a wildlife sanctuary. Meditation, forest, food from the garden, and a good deal of silence.

Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary

What it is

Four days built around one idea from the Upanishads: that the self you think is separate from everything else is not. The programme does not argue the point. It puts you in the forest, in water, and in silence, and lets the argument make itself.

The owners have kept a yogic routine on this land for years. This is the shape of that routine, opened to guests.

The four days

Day one Arrival

Check in at two, and a welcome offering. A first conversation with your guide to set what you are here for, and an introduction to maya — the habit of seeing separation where there is none.

In the afternoon, the plunge pool in your room, used as a cleansing rather than a swim. At sunset, yoga on the terrace and a walk. Dinner is sattvic, simple, and eaten without talking. The evening ends with reading.

Day two The forest

Meditation in the garden at half past six, then a walking meditation into Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary. Not a hike. You will be shown what grows here and you will pick some of it, and it will be your lunch.

The afternoon is an ayurvedic abhyanga massage with warm oil, then aqua healing — floating in your own plunge pool with the light down and the sound out, until the edges go. In the evening, a sound meditation: at the waterfall in the rainy season, on the beach the rest of the year.

Day three The sea

Down to Kashid before dawn for sunrise over the water, and pranayama on the sand. The ocean does the teaching here: one body, and every wave briefly convinced it is its own.

Later, a private ayurvedic consultation on keeping the balance once you are home, free time to sit with the days, and a cold therapy session for clarity. Dinner is shared, and the evening's conversation moves from tat tvam asi to aham brahmasmi.

Day four Leaving

A last silent sitting at seven, breakfast, and a closing session where you are given a mantra of your own to take with you. Check out at eleven.
